A Quick Guide to Affiliate Marketing: Doing Keyword Research

Wait, wait…

Why do you even need to do keyword research?

The premise is simple:

You have a product or service to market to customers. You can only do that successfully, if your customers organically find your content when they need it the most.

How do your customers organically find your content on the internet?

By submitting their queries to Google, Bing, Yahoo, or any other search engine for that matter.

The descriptive words that your customers use in their queries are called “keywords”.

So essentially, it’s the keywords through which your customers find the content that you have created to market a product or service.

Without keyword research, you can’t create a content that resonates with the search intention of your customers. Hence, any content that you create will just remain indexed on the internet, without bringing any meaningful traffic to your affiliate marketing website.

Long story short; keyword research is one of the mainstays of running a successful affiliate marketing business.

So, how do you do keyword research?

This is your weekly blog series, “A Quick Guide to Affiliate Marketing”, and I’m Tre’ Mathis of WiFi Entrepreneur.

Today, we’ll be taking a look at how to do keyword research for your affiliate marketing business.

How to do keyword research for affiliate marketing

Select a niche product

The very first thing you need to do is select a niche product. By selecting “a niche product”, we mean selecting any one product from your extensive product catalog that you intend to do the keyword research for.

If you market only one product, then that product is your niche product.

Create a list of general keywords

Once you have selected a niche product, you next need to do some manual brainstorming. Think as if you were the customer looking for the information on that product, what keywords would you have used for your search. Note down of all the keywords that come to your mind.

For example, let’s say your niche product are indoor soccer boots.

Some potential keywords for indoor soccer boots include:

  • Best indoor soccer boots
  • Comfortable indoor soccer boots
  • Cheap indoor soccer boots
  • Branded indoor soccer boots
  • High quality indoor soccer boots

Expand the list to include specialized keywords

After you have created a list of general keywords for your niche product, use those keywords as seeds to create more specialized, in-depth keywords. You can use websites like Amazon.com, WordTracker.com, Keywordtool.io, etc. for help.

Sticking to the indoor soccer boots example, you may create a list that looks something like this:

Best indoor soccer boots Comfortable indoor soccer boots
Cheap indoor soccer boots Branded indoor soccer boots
High quality indoor soccer boots Laceless indoor soccer boots
Leather indoor soccer boots Best laceless indoor soccer boots
Comfortable laceless indoor soccer boots Cheap laceless indoor soccer boots
Best leather indoor soccer boots Comfortable leather indoor soccer boots
Cheap leather indoor soccer boots Branded laceless indoor soccer boots
Buy indoor soccer boots online Buy laceless indoor soccer boots online
Buy leather indoor soccer boots online Buy branded indoor soccer boots online
Buy cheap leather indoor soccer boots Buy cheap laceless indoor soccer boots

Eliminate high competition keywords from the list

The final step in the process is to eliminate high competition keywords from your long list of potential keywords.

What are high competition keywords, and why chunk them off?

High competition keywords are keywords for which the competition is high. Alternatively speaking, these keywords are extremely difficult to rank for. As such, it’s better that you avoid them and instead focus on low competition keywords.

Generally, the long phrase keywords, also called long tail keywords, have the lowest competition and are the highest converting keywords.

These are the keywords you should be targeting when creating content.

You can use many tools such as SEMrush, Moz Keyword Explorer and KW Finder among others, to research for keyword competition.

Refine your list accordingly.

You’re now ready to create some absolutely traffic-licious content for your affiliate marketing website.

Till the next post, goodbye!
