Everywhere you look, web experts are telling you that you need SEO. But why is SEO so important?
We’re breaking down what you need to know, and why it’s time to start focusing on your site’s SEO if you want to succeed.
SEO Gets Your Site Ranked
Google is the gatekeeper of web traffic, with billions of searches run each day. In order to continue to be the search engine of choice for a large portion of the population, Google uses constantly updating algorithms.
These algorithms scroll through websites, indexing certain keywords and features. They use this information to decide where a site should fall in a list of search options for a given keyword or phrase, and in the case of websites for local businesses, where a web surfer is located.
Even if you don’t focus on effective SEO strategies, your website is still going to get ranked. When you’re writing content to add to your site, you’ll naturally use keywords related to the topic of your website. You’ll also likely add links, create menus, and interact with visitors, all features that get indexed by Google.
But if you aren’t using effective SEO strategies to target what the algorithms are searching for, you aren’t going to rank well.
Organic Searches Beat Out Paid Search Results Every Time
SEO is a time-consuming process. Some website owners see the long process in front of them and decide to look for a shortcut. That shortcut is usually paid advertisements on search engines.
These ads look like normal search results on Google. But they appear at the very top of the page and have a small square with the word “AD” to the left of the result.
While appearing at the top of the search results might sound like a great way to get some fast traffic to your site, that may not be the case at all. That’s because many web surfers are now aware that those top results are advertisements.
Unlike social media ads that blend into a busy timeline, search ads are grouped together and stand out.
As they are paid to be in the top slot, those web surfers realize that they may not be the best result for the search they ran.
Many web surfers will scroll right past these ads to get to the organic results below. In fact, between 70 and 80 percent of web surfers ignore paid ads.
A Better Rank Means More Traffic
So why is SEO so important? Because with great SEO strategies, you’ll get a better search engine ranking. And with a better search engine ranking, you’ll enjoy a big boost in traffic.
The top organic result for any given keyword search gets 33 percent of all traffic for that search. The top 3 organic results take 60 percent of all searches, while the first page of results claims a whopping 89 percent.
SEO is important because it pays off big in terms of web traffic.
